Resize for the destination, not for a universal number

A useful image size begins with the real placement. A profile image, product card, website hero, email signature, and print document all need different dimensions. Reducing a large source is usually safe when the final output still contains enough pixels for the display. Enlarging a small source can make the file bigger, but it does not recreate detail that was never captured.

Keep aspect ratio enabled for ordinary photos and logos unless stretching is a deliberate effect. If a destination requires a different shape, crop to the target ratio instead of forcing the width and height independently. This preserves natural proportions and gives you control over what content is removed.

High-density screens and sharp exports

A website may display an image at a smaller CSS size than the file's pixel dimensions. Supplying a moderately larger raster can help on high-density screens, but there is little benefit in sending a multi-megapixel source to a small card. Developers can use responsive images so browsers choose an appropriate file for each layout and device.

Why resizing cannot recover lost image detail

Increasing width and height adds pixels through interpolation, but it does not recreate information that was missing from the original capture or export. A small blurry logo can become a larger blurry logo. When important artwork exists only as a low-resolution raster, look for the original design file, a larger export, or a legitimate vector source before relying on upscaling.
